Dallas Black Dance Academy, founded in 1974 by Mrs. Ann Williams, is the official school of Dallas Black Dance Theatre. The Academy emphasizes that through directed dance studies in a learning environment, the mind is disciplined to control one's total body in making better decisions for life and developing self-esteem.
The academy offers a range of classes for students of all ages and levels. Professional dance instructors teach all Academy classes with emphasis in their specialization. Many are present and former dancers of the Dallas Black Dance Theatre.
Classes are available in ballet, jazz, African, modern, hip-hop and tap. Adults can also enjoy classes in yoga.
Students age 4-14 are required to take ballet each year. Students ages 7 and older are encouraged to enroll in additional classes- Jazz, African and Modern. Student placement is based on the student's independent mastery of the skills and techniques that are taught. Classes for children age 4 to 14 are held mainly on Saturdays. Classes for teens and adults are held during the week in the evenings. For academy schedule and registration, click here.
Dallas Black Dance Academy's Junior Performing Company
Students that show exceptional performance skills are encouraged to audition for the Academy's Performing Ensemble. This group of students performs locally at festivals and various events in the Dallas area.
Students, who further progress through the professional level, will have the opportunity to audition for DBDT II, and later audition for the main company, Dallas Black Dance Theatre.
