Founded in 1976 by Ann Williams, Dallas Black Dance Theatre is the oldest, continuously operating professional dance company in Dallas. A contemporary modern dance company, the ensemble consists of professional, full-time dancers performing a mixed repertoire of classical, modern, jazz, African, and spiritual works by nationally and internationally known choreographers. DBDT is available for touring year-round and will tour a mixed repertory of classic and contemporary modern works by choreographers such as Asadata Dafora, Hope Boykin, Christopher L. Huggins, Donald McKayle, Darrell Grand Moultrie, Matthew Rushing, Jamal Story, Kameron N. Saunders, Nejla Yatkin, and others. The Company is a diverse multi-ethnic troupe that consists of well trained, exciting and skillful dancers that thrill, excite and leave its ever expanding audiences asking for more. The Company is available for residencies that include master classes, workshops, children and senior citizen matinees, lecture-demonstrations, and full evening performances.
The Company’s mission is to create and produce contemporary modern dance at its highest level of artistic excellence through performances and educational programs that bridge cultures and reach diverse communities.
The Company travels with a full-time company of dancers, Artistic Director, Lighting Director, Production Manager, and Stage Manager.
Past Notable Performances include the 1996 and 2012 Olympic Arts Festival, Broadway, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors Festival, National Black Arts Festival, Sixth International Ballet Festival in Miami and international arts festivals in Austria, Belize, Bermuda, England, Italy, Japan, Peru, South Africa, Spain and Zimbabwe. In August 2021, Dallas Black Dance Theatre made its Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival debut. LIKE WATER by the award-winning choreographer Darrell Grand Moultrie was commissioned by Jacob’s Pillow as the inaugural recipient of the Joan B. Hunter New Work Commission. Summer 2022, Dallas Black Dance Theatre had the pleasure of performing at Capitol One City Parks Foundation Summer Stage, Battery Dance Festival, and International Festival of Arts and Ideas.
DBDT has conducted week-long residencies in Cheverly, Maryland; Irvine, Los Angeles, San Jose, Los Altos Hills, Monterrey, Oakland and San Francisco, California; Bowling Green, Ohio; Erie, Pennsylvania; St. Petersburg, Florida; Fort Wayne & Indianapolis, Indiana; Fish Creek, Wisconsin; Jackson, Mississippi; Charleston, South Carolina and Little Rock, Arkansas.
