Jayla Johnson, originally from Hammond, Indiana, began her training at South Shore Dance Alliance, studying the fundamentals of classical dance. Johnson later attended the Chicago Multicultural Dance Center under the direction of Homer Byrant and was accepted into The Chicago High School for the Arts, where she trained with Sarah Ford Thompson, Tracey Franklin, and many more staff and guest artists. Jayla received additional training attending the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s summer intensive in 2018, and The Ailey School summer intensive in 2016. Ms. Johnson earned her BFA from the University of Missouri Kansas-City studying with Deeanna Hiett, Gary Abbott, Karen Brown, and Ronald Tice. Johnson has performed works by guest artists Kevin Iega Jeff, Cleo Parker Robinson, Christopher L. Huggins, and Jae Man Joo. She has also performed with the Kansas City friends of Alvin Ailey, and Williams Henry Dance Theatre. This Marks Jayla’s first season with DBDT: Encore!
