Dallas Black Dance Theatre Founder, Ann Williams, began DBDT: Encore! (formerly Dallas Black Dance Theatre II) in September 2000 to feature the best and most promising students of the Dallas Black Dance Academy. Over time, the company has grown in breadth, attracting artists who aspire to professional careers in dance.
This professional company consists of 11 multi-ethnic aspiring artists from around the nation. Since its inception, Encore! has grown in popularity and thrilled audiences with its fresh allure. Encore! provides an opportunity for young artists to develop their dance skills while serving the Dallas/Ft. Worth community and touring around the world with dance performances of the highest artistic quality. The Company is available for residencies that include master classes, workshops, children and senior citizen matinees, lecture-demonstrations, and full evening performances.
Under the artistic direction of Nycole Ray, the company’s mission is to create and produce contemporary modern dance at its highest level of artistic excellence through performances and educational programs that bridge cultures and reach diverse communities.
DBDT: Encore! performs a diversified repertoire of modern, jazz, African, lyrical and spiritual works by emerging and internationally recognized choreographers including Baba Chuck Davis, Milton Myers, Christopher L. Huggins, Katarzyna Skarpetowska, Takehiro Ueyama, Bruce Wood®, Sidra Bell, Nicholas Villeneuve, Edmond Giles, Nycole Ray, Richard A. Freeman, Jr., Dianne Grigsby, and many others.
Throughout their history, DBDT: Encore! has had the pleasure to collaborate with The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, The Dallas Museum of Art, and in 2016 was featured in The Dallas Opera’s highly acclaimed production of Show Boat and TEDX. In 2022, Encore! performed with QuestLove in the augural QuestLove’s Hip Hop Brunch. The company has also performed in California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oklahoma, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Maryland, and has earned an esteemed international reputation for their performances at festivals in Canada, Mexico, and Chile.
